A pinned sticky in Stickies by Coduo is a small borderless window that floats above your other apps, shows on every Space and can sit over a full-screen app. It stays where you drag it until you unpin it or quit the app. Stickies by Coduo is a separate Mac app from Apple's Stickies, it never reads or changes Apple's notes, and it is not released yet.
What is a pinned sticky?
A pinned sticky is one of your stickies shown on the desktop as its own window. Every sticky is in one of two places: pinned, floating on the desktop, or stashed, resting as a thin sliver on the right edge of the screen. The pin button in the sticky's title bar moves it between the two.
Each pinned sticky gets a separate window. Three pinned stickies are three windows you can place independently, and the app remembers each window's position when you move it, so a sticky reopens where you left it.
You make a pinned sticky in one of three ways:
- Press ⌘⇧N in any app. A new, empty sticky opens already pinned.
- Write a sticky in the menu-bar Quick Panel with its pin turned on, then save.
- Open a stashed sticky and click the pin in its title bar.
Does a pinned sticky stay above other apps?
Yes. A pinned sticky sits at the macOS floating window level, which keeps it above ordinary app windows while you work in them. There is no separate float switch to find, because pinned means floating. Apple's Stickies works the other way round: you float a note by choosing Window > Float on Top for that one note.
A stashed sticky you open to read behaves differently on purpose. It opens in the same kind of floating window, but the moment you click into another window it closes and goes back to the edge. Only pinning makes it stay.
Does it follow you to other Spaces and full-screen apps?
Yes. The app sets every pinned sticky to join all Spaces and to show alongside full-screen apps. Switch desktops and the sticky is still there, in the same spot.
How big is a pinned sticky?
A new pinned sticky opens 264 points wide and 300 tall, the same size as the compose card in the Quick Panel. It has rounded corners and a shadow and none of the usual macOS window buttons; you move it by dragging its title bar. The current build draws every sticky at that one size, so plan on 264 × 300 rather than resizing.
What can you write in a pinned sticky?
A pinned sticky holds a title and a markdown body. The body supports exactly three formats: bold, italic and strikethrough. Click the T button at the bottom left to show them.
The body saves on its own a quarter of a second after you stop typing, and again when the window closes. The title comes from the Quick Panel when you write the sticky there; the sticky's own window shows the title but has no field for editing it, so a sticky made with ⌘⇧N shows the placeholder "Title".
The … button at the bottom right opens a menu with two items:
- Copy puts the body on the clipboard as markdown. It copies the body only, not the title.
- Delete removes the sticky immediately. There is no confirmation, no trash and no undo.
How do you put a pinned sticky away?
Click the pin in its title bar. The window closes and the sticky becomes a sliver at the top of the stash on the right screen edge, where hovering it shows a peek of its text. The stash page covers how that works, with its sizes and timings.
The pin is the only control that moves a sticky between the desktop and the edge, so there is no close button that hides a sticky and leaves it pinned.
What can't a pinned sticky do?
A pinned sticky is a small markdown note with three formats, and the current build stops there:
- No lists or checklists. There is no bullet or checkbox control.
- No images, fonts or text sizes. The format bar has bold, italic and strikethrough only.
- No undo for Delete. Delete is immediate, and the app keeps no copy of a deleted sticky.
- No title editing in the window. Titles come from the Quick Panel.
- No resizing to rely on. Every sticky draws at 264 × 300 points.
- No reopening after a quit. Pinned stickies do not come back on their own when the app starts again. They stay pinned, and you open each one from the recent row in the menu-bar Quick Panel, where it returns to its saved position.
- Mac only. There is no iPhone or iPad app.
