# Futari camera app FAQ: what it is and what you need > **TL;DR** Futari, called Futari Kamera on the Home Screen, is an iPhone camera app for two phones. One iPhone shoots with its back camera; the other shows that camera's live view and fires the shutter, zooms and sets focus. Both phones need iOS 26 and the app, on the same Wi-Fi. Only one of the two needs a subscription, and it covers both phones for that session. Every photo and video is saved to a Futari album on both phones. Futari is an iPhone camera app that pairs two iPhones: one phone shoots with its back camera, and the other shows that camera's live view and works as its shutter. You need two iPhones running iOS 26, both with the app installed and on the same Wi-Fi, and a subscription on at least one of them. ## What is the Futari camera app? Futari is a two-phone camera: the Shoot phone holds the camera, and the See phone shows its live frame and takes the picture. The app's own one-line summary is "Two phones, one shot. Both of you see the frame before it is taken." The name is Japanese. Futari, 二人, means "two people" or "together". On the Home Screen the app is called Futari Kamera. Futari is built for photos of the person who usually ends up holding the camera. Prop the Shoot phone up, walk into the frame with the See phone, check the shot on its screen and press the shutter. Or hand the See phone to the person posing, so they approve the frame before it is taken. ## What do I need to use Futari? You need two iPhones, each running iOS 26 or later with Futari installed, and both joined to the same Wi-Fi network. Futari is iPhone only: it does not run on iPad, and there is no Android version. The app also runs in portrait only. The app's help sheet lists the same conditions: "Both phones need Futari Kamera, on one Wi-Fi", then "Join the same Wi-Fi" and "Open Futari Kamera there". Open Futari on both phones, tap the other phone's name when it appears, and accept on the other phone. In order: 1. Put both iPhones on the same Wi-Fi and open Futari on each. Allow Local Network access when iOS asks; that is how the phones find each other. 2. On the Home screen, each phone shows "Searching..." and gives itself a generated name. If the other phone has no app yet, tap "How Futari Kamera works?" for a QR code that links to the App Store. 3. Tap the other phone's name under "Connect to...". 4. The other phone shows "wants to connect". Tap Accept. 5. Pick a role, See or Shoot. The See phone sends three commands to the Shoot phone: take the shot or start and stop a recording, zoom, and tap to set focus and exposure. The photo and video switch is on the Shoot phone only; the See phone has none, and its shutter becomes a stop button while the Shoot phone records. ## Who pays for Futari? At least one of the two phones needs a Futari subscription, and it covers both phones for that session. When you connect, the app checks whether either phone is subscribed; if one is, the session is premium and the other phone rides along. Nothing transfers to the other phone, so its access ends when the session does. There is no free tier. Connecting is the thing the subscription pays for, so a pair where neither phone subscribes cannot connect. A phone without a subscription shows "Subscribe to connect to anyone" on its Home screen. The Shoot phone saves what it captured, and the See phone receives the file over the link and saves its own copy. The app keeps no copy of its own; the album is the only record. Futari shoots photos and videos. Videos are `.mov` files. If you deny microphone access, videos still record, with no sound. A recording keeps going if the link between the phones drops. ## Does Futari upload anything? Photos and videos stay on the two phones. The live view and every shot go directly from one phone to the other, with no server in between. The app does send anonymous usage events to PostHog, such as when a pairing starts or a shot is taken, with no personal data or media in them and no person profiles. The paywall runs on Superwall, also without an account. ## What does Futari not do? Futari has no self-timer, burst mode, filters, portrait mode, front camera, flash control, iPad version or Android version. The app once had a timer, burst, filters, flip-camera and flash control on the See phone. [Coduo](https://www.coduo.co/futari/about) deleted them on 17 September 2026 and kept only the controls a two-phone camera needs. The camera is always the back one, and the flash stays on Auto. Two behaviours can catch you out: - The screen does not auto-lock while Futari is open. - If you switch away from Futari on either phone, the pair ends on both. It reconnects from the Home screen when both phones are back in the app. ## Frequently asked questions ### Do both phones need the Futari app? Yes. Futari connects two iPhones that both have the app installed and open, and both have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
